A New Hobby?

I'm contemplating a new hobby... photography. It's just one of the many things I've always wanted to pursue but never really followed through (thus is the story of my life)... but I'm trying to change that... and this is the first step. It also helps that this would encourage my mother's own passion for photography, photoshop, making photostories aka slide shows w/music and web design. It's something we can also pursue together, which is on more thing that would bond me with someone I consider to be one of my best friends.

So here is the question I pose to you... I do have natural photo taking abilities b/c I'm Korean. Not to further general stereotypes... lol. So I have my simple point and shoot canon camera. I would like to purchase a camera that is digital but allows me to focus, refocus, unfocus and all that good stuff to try to enhance my own photographic eye... so any and all suggestions and advice regarding a camera brand, type, model etc to look at would be appreciated... Also, any suggestions for my mother as well... she needs something of the same nature, but since she is like "no speeku engrishu" learning through manuals won't be as easy, so, if you can keep that in mind. Currently I'm looking into the Canon EOS models...

Thanks !!!

UPDATE: I just read this and I think I'm leaning towards a Canon SLR of some sort... maybe the Digital Rebel Xti. Thoughts?

  1. Personally, I am a Nikon junkie. If I didn't go Nikon I would probably go Canon, but it's just a lens thing for me and I'm a complete Nikon snob. Check out the Nikon D40. It is a great started DSLR which you can run in a variety of full auto and manual modes. Regardless of what you decide to purchase, try Amazon for great prices...plus their 30 day price guarantee means if the price drops within 30 days of your purchase and you notify them, they will refund you the amount equivalent to the price change. It's a nice perk with something like a camera purchase where prices drop frequently. Keep me posted on what you pick!

  2. I use a Canon 40D and just love it. I heard the rebel is fairly comparable and is a good "starter" DSLR.

Let us know what you get! And can't wait to see your pics! :)

  3. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi and ADORE it! I highly recommend it - user friendly for beginners but lots of upgrades to help you grow.
