{Vendor Tip} Destressing Makeup Tip #4

Another great post from our local Make up Artist Vendor:

Making Eye Shadow Last

You put on eye shadow in the morning. Ever wonder where it goes by lunchtime? If it’s caked in the crease of your eyelid, that’s worse. How can you keep eye shadow smoothly, evenly in place through the day ~ especially on your wedding day?

Actually, there are two key factors:
1) prepping the eye lid for shadow
2) quality of the eye shadow itself

Putting eye shadow directly on bare eye lids is the least effective way to apply it. The color pigment does not adhere to the bare skin as well as it adheres to a proper base or primer. There are eye lid primers (like concealers) that dry on application and make a great base for eye shadow. You can also sparingly sponge on your concealer and blend it across the eye lid, then apply a light dusting of your loose or pressed face powder. This will keep both a concealer and your eye color from creasing on your lid for many hours and allow the color to adhere much longer.

With eye shadow, you often get what you pay for. Unless you are a pro at using it, avoid cream eye shadows. Powder shadows apply smoothly and easily. A prestige brand eye shadow will generally have a much higher percentage of pigment, so the color will show up with even a light application and will stay put longer on a prepped eye lid. Cheaper brands of eye shadow will look similar in the compact, but will not show up the same on the lid. With less pigment, they have a shorter “lid life”. Find a few excellent quality eye shadows in neutral colors that flatter your eyes and style and master their application to pop your eyes. That will be a great investment in you. Buying quality means you only “cry” once!

MLL's Surprise Bachelorette Party

So, Just to conclude my big weekend in Cali at the end of February (Engagement Party, Booked Venue, Booked Photobooth, Booked Videographer, Booked Officiant, Booked Chairs)... the one big thing i've been keeping a secret is the Surprise Bachelorette Party that we threw my good friend MLL who's getting married in June. I wanted to talk about it here, but I know she sometimes checks my blog and i couldn't risk it.

The timing was perfect... MLL was planning to come to the E-party and her FH was gonna fly in as well. My other High school friends were coming down for my party, so the Friday night before, we planned with the utmost care... a surprise party for MLL.

It almost went off without a hitch... with a few glitches here and there. But we did pull it off, and we had a blast! We all had cute hoodies that said "Team MLL" and her wedding date, with our nicknames (the names she called us) on the front of the hoodies... For her, she had a white one that said "bride" and "Mll & FH" and their wedding date. We got her cute lingerie and a boa, a tiara, and a sash, a bride to be pin as well. Of course we had a limo waiting who then took us to a club where i got us on the guest list so there was no cover charge.

We definitely had a blast... full of great memories. All i can say though is, we are old... we probably stayed out a total of 2.5 hrs before we were all exhausted. Granted MLL and I were on a 3 hr time difference... not sure, but i think old age explains the rest of the gang's early retirement that night :)

Thursday morning Rant

Is it just me, or does it bother you too when a vendor refuses to negotiate... OR if they even consider it, they act like they are doing you a favor?

I don't think i'm down to be treated as if our money to pay for their services is somehow doing ME A FAVOR??? Shouldn't you AS A VENDOR want my business? UGH!

On the upside, i've got some great news coming up regarding my florist... a vendor who makes me more excited about my own wedding! Now THAT is what you want in a vendor!

I just created my own Facebook Page and would be thrilled if you'd become a fan !!! YAY! Thanks a bunch in advance :-)

2010 Get Married Trends

Have you seen the top 10 2010 tips from Get Married TV?

"1. Back to Basics
Events will focus on the attention to the details, the foundation of the event, not the drama or grandeur of the evening. Consider spending more on the lasting memories than the showmanship of the event. Spend a bit more than the average budget allotment on photography mediums rather than abundant floral. Or consider a bit of a longer stay on your honeymoon and a little less of a party at the reception and you’ll be grateful for your decision in the end.

2. Home Weddings Hit Home
Intimate and personal affairs in the backyard are bigger than ever. Going home incorporates the continued trend of personalizing the wedding day experience.
Smaller size guest lists, more intimate settings, grass roots weddings, elegant and detail driven, but in no way small on what counts.

3. Buttercream on the Big Day
Fondant is falling behind, buttercream corners the market.
Tools and techniques now allow for buttercream to look as smooth as fondant when applied by a skilled artist. You have the option of better flavor, more natural ingredients, and less costly cakes that no longer suffer or lack in design.

4. Favor Comeback
Personalized appreciation is back. The effect that an event has on the guests is more noticeable than ever before so the importance of a favor is felt more than ever. Be sure to appreciate to those in attendance - it’s not just an afterthought, omission, or generic item. Think local artisans, locally grown products, personal mementos, and on-the-spot print outs.

5. Nearby Destinations
Nearby destination weddings are taking flight over the exotic and far off locales. The ever popular destination wedding will remain but guests will get out of town by car (within driving distance) so couples can create a weekend, guests get an escape, but no one breaks the bank. Enjoying the US destination locations, spend within your own local economies, create a greener effect, experience undiscovered backyards, and stay sensible about cost while you’re at away.

6. Colors
Monochromatic palettes - this doesn’t mean muted colors, just single color bunches. Vibrant Colors: Orange, green, yellow, and pink. Metal Colors: Gold, silver, copper, and pewter. And black is definitely the new black. Break the rules and show off the darker side of your event.

7. Greener Conscience
Emerging will be the newest phase of eco-conscience: A better understanding of the gray shades of green. You will see more emphasis on the smaller changes that are less recognizable to the guest (i.e. cleaning green, composting, solar and LED lighting, no more oasis in floral arrangements, less catering waste). It’s no longer about making the event appear “organic” – it’s about understanding how things are made, disposed of, and where/when events take place. Learning to make better choices that are unseen by the guest are just as important as those tree-free invitations everyone is talking about.

8. Video Integration into Events
We’ve all seen the photo montages of your childhoods during dinner but the next phase in video at your event comes in several different forms. Video DJ’s are immerging, allowing your dance party to dance to the visuals of the music videos; ceremonies are being broadcast on screens for better viewing from the back; and time lapse photography is being shot and integrated into video for current day montages of you and your fiancĆ©. Love to party? Set up crane camera and project the event as it unfolds on screens around the dance floor (budget permitting of course).

9. HD Video
Videographers have already gone hi-def. But next year all or most will make such a transition, making HD and even Blu Ray the norm in wedding videography. Upgrade now and appreciate the quality later. This also means smaller cameras on site and less intrusion into your event, all around a better (though more costly) option on the big day.

10. Visual Combinations
Professional grade still photo cameras like the Canon 5D Mark II DSLR are being released with HD video capabilities included. It is recommended to have both a videographer and a photographer at your wedding to capture every moment of the big day. Tech-savvy brides looking for a new experience, may like to experiment with a visual professional (videographer or photographer) who has this technology. In the future, you will begin to see an emergence of two-in-one companies. Companies like Engaging Films and Video Keepsakes of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles will shoot video and take stills, but use only one piece of technology."

Great Tips From Get Married

Colin Cowie and Get Married offer 5 Spring Wedding Trends for the Fashionable Bride who wants to merge personal and seasonal styles while capturing the essence of spring in her wedding.

1. Extract electric colors from nature: Lift colors straight from spring leaves, flowers and shoots of grass, and bring them to the reception tables and the bridal dresses. Grass green, canary yellow and chaparelli pinks, accented with gold or pewter, are exciting and fresh.

2. Fuse youthful flavors in a sophisticated spirit: Capture the popping colors of spring by serving lollipops at a candy station, popcorn at valet, or other tasty treats to satisfy your palette.

3. Combine deep colors with lighter papers: Keep wedding invitations, table cards and programs fresh with light papers like tissue and vellum. Incorporate spring colors like white ink on rich green paper or shocking pink ink on lime green paper. Reverse the formula with green inks on white paper.

4. Shorten the hemlines and heighten the style: Stand out from the crowd but blend with the event intention by wearing a shorter dress with an eye-catching pair of heels. Create a chic retro look with a short birdcage wedding veil and a set of short gloves.

5. Create an at-home atmosphere with backyard elegance: Create a quality backyard wedding that is intimate and organic with your garden being the aesthetic to inspire your dƩcor. Spring weather is unpredictable so have heaters and a back-up plan of moving inside or under a gorgeous canopy.

I'm Hitched Event

Last Thursday night, I attended an event at the Hitched Salon in Georgetown! It was awesome.

It was planned by Maria at Ritzy Bee Events and there was a long list of great panelists including:
Anne Chertoff, event style and trendsetter Bill Hohman of Design Cuisine and from a panel of wedding experts including Kate Headley Photography, Humanstory Films, K. Rose Cakes, Holly Chapple Flowers and Ritzy Bee Events who answered questions from brides and provided advice about Wedding planning.

The event was really great and the salon had so many beautiful dresses and cute items including rhinestone beaded tanks, undies... Julianne Smith Garters ... and they had some pretty awesome giveways as well. Definitely a great Thursday night :)

Helping out a Fellow Bride

All You DC/MD/NoVA Brides... I've got a friend who has asked me to ask my wonderful readers for advice, suggestions, vendor reviews and more for a fellow bride who is currently planning for a wedding in the Baltimore/DC area.

Have you heard of a vendor who was awesome? Awful?

Do you have a good resource where someone can really find a lot of info? (Like Weddzilla ?)

Are there any bloggers out there who are planning a Baltimore area wedding? Wanna hook up with other brides in the same area and feed off each other's research?

Leave a comment. Leave a suggestion. Leave a vendor's name... As we all know, nothing beats when one bride helps another bride... and nothing beats using more than one wedding to negotiate a vendor down in price too...

Thanks in advance Y'all!

Booking the Venue

As those of you know who've been following my blog, my journey to booking my venue has been a long and arduous process - mostly b/c of the uncertainty and patience required in waiting for the 12 month mark to hit. I've had numerous emails and phone calls to the venue to make sure that I wouldn't wait 8 months for nothing and recieved the best assurances I could.

In the meantime I did book my photographer (Hazelnut Photography) and in January I booked my Live Event Artist (Karen Wall). Once the holidays passed, I began to do research on a few other vendors ... so that I could hit the ground running (stay tuned, I'll be blogging about those soon).

So on February 27, 2009 we "booked the venue".  Paola (Lovely Wedding Coordinator), SIL, FH, and I all met at the Rancho Santa Margarita Bell Tower.  My BFF Sophia and her brother also joined us, as there amazing restaurant By Brazil BBQ is catering our big day. We met with Nancy at the site and got the GRAND tour. With so many brilliant minds in one spot, we were able to ask Nancy a ton of questions - some she said she'd never heard... so apparently our minds were in full gear examining every aspect of the venue.

So without further ado... we have booked the reception area for the wedding (ceremony permits will be given in September due to other city regulations of a 6 month max rule) for March 6, 2010!!!

Our Ceremony Lawn (Permit will be received in September !!)

The area where I will walk out of to go down the aisle. It will also be where part of our cocktail hour will take place!

Rest of the cocktail hour area!

Contemplating this as the background to the sweetheart table or...

using this far well so we are closest to all guests as possible! The ballroom fits 250 comfortably with a dance floor!
Whaddya think? We definitely will be doing lots of stuff to add a little drama to the room - but i think its such a great slate to start with! :)

Update: Some pics of prior weddings... here...here... here...

Blurb Album?

Anybody know of anyone or any place that could create a Blurb Album? A friend of mine is looking for someone with some skills to put this together for her... Suggestions? Anyone?

PS. This would need to have a quick turn around as well... possibly no later than the end of the week (within three days even?)

A good cause

It's true they say that each person you meet affects your life somehow. I have an old high school classmate who is in need of help. He's a Facebook friend, but we don't chat much... i just remember him from back when we had German Class together... and Facebook has let me know that he needs help. So i'm helping to spread the word....

This is what i know...

"After a particularly fierce cold, Glen has developed Guillain-Barre syndrome. He was admitted to UCI Medical Center's Neuroscience ICU on Friday, Jan. 30th after his legs and arms began to tingle and go numb. The numbness and ascending paralysis has continued just as described in the link provided above."

He is currently undergoing treatment... you can track his progress here. Glen doesn't have health insurance which just mounts the stress and pressure of this particular syndrome but You can also help donate to his cause, every little bit counts. Even if its $5 bucks... it can still make a huge difference!

So, always keep in mind... as many lose their jobs, lose their homes... there are others who are on the brink of losing so much more, so pay it forward and help someone out... one less Starbucks Coffee for you can make a world of difference to him!

And a picture of FH and I...

I still have much to tell you and more pics to share that we took at the venue, so be patient... and for those of you who have noticed i've been kinda absent with the comments on your blog - i do plan to play catch up this weekend, so don't think I've just started to not care... it's quite the opposite and i'm feeling a bit frazzled without my daily Blog inspirations ...

{Vendor Tip} De-stressing Make Up tip #3

De-stressing Makeup Tip #3

Wedding Day Zits

The most common unwelcome guests at your wedding might be the red ones that appear on your face a day or two before – or even on the morning of - your wedding day. It is more often than not that I arrive to do makeup on the wedding day to find a bride stressing over her breakouts and how she will look in photos. Not to worry - makeup artists are skilled at covering, blending, and erasing away the zits - but what avoidance strategy can you use?

First, drink lots of water prior to the wedding day. Coffee, tea, and alcohol contribute to dehydration, so balance out the partying with some good old H2O, which your skin craves. Healthy toxin-cleansing moisture comes from within.

Second, don’t ever get a deep cleansing facial within at least 10 days of the wedding. Your skin may react and release toxins for days afterward and needs time to heal and normalize. Facials are a wonderful thing, but NEVER right before the big day.

Third, take off all your makeup before falling into bed at night. Even if you don’t wear makeup that day - still cleanse, tone & moisturize your skin before bed. Scientific research shows that the skin (your body’s largest organ) repairs and renews itself at night while you sleep. Make sure it is clean and healthy for that process. Some studies suggest that skin cell renewal peaks between 10 and 12 midnight, a great case for getting to bed earlier when possible!

What about Plan B ~ when good skin goes bad?

There are many home remedies and acne products people recommend, but on the wedding day, you don’t want something like honey or toothpaste or mashed banana or fresh papaya juice on your face. Besides the possible irritation factor (especially with toothpaste), you want some immediate magic. My best advice for wedding morning zit minimization is 1) Visine. It really takes some of the red out and disappears without notice. 2) Layer concealer and powder. If the blemish is dry, dot and press concealer over it, apply regular foundation over your face, re-dot and press concealer over it again and then dust a pressed powder over the face.
If the zit is wet, you may have to layer several times with a concealer/powder/concealer/powder repetition, pressing with your finger (not rubbing) to build a cover for the blemish.

Here is one lovely bride with whom we used Plan B – who knew?!

A shout out to the fabulous Ron of Fairfaxweddings.net for great photo work, too.

I'm ba~~~ck!

So i'm back and I have so much to report... but my computer is broken and work is crazy, but PLEASE be patient with me... i hope to have posts up of my VERY eventful weekend including my first every Bachelorette Party that I threw for one of my best friends, my own engagement party... but also news regarding the wedding planning and things i can cross off my list... so stay tuned...
