Congratulations to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge!

While some are tired of the Royal Wedding, others absolutely love it...I am in the middle - excited for these two and wishing them nothing but the best! I know there is a lot of turmoil and destruction going on in our own country and beyond, but I think its ok to take a moment to wish these newlyweds a wonderful life together and see the beauty that there is in love. At the same time, let's also focus our energies in helping those who have survived the various destructions of nature all over the world and not forget them !

Congrats to Prince William & Catherine Middleton... Duke & Duchess of Cambridge!

Spring Health Resolutions

Now that the better weather seems to be upon us (knock on wood) and outdoor activities can resume, I'm considering attempting this whole "running" thing again. While I absolutely hate it, I've worked my way up to 5 minute spurts with walking in between on a treadmill doing the C25K program. Once (and only once) I actually ran 20 minutes straight and that about killed me... but i'm hoping taking the activity outdoors can help.

While I try to take the pups with me to the mall, i feel that while I'm "learning" to run - i may need to focus on that and now the two crazy dogs going every which way and trying to eat anything they find while on our walks/runs...

So i'm looking to my readers for advice on this. I'm not a runner. I can elliptical until the world ends, but i know that incorporating a 3 mile run 3x a week could change up my work outs drastically and actually make a huge difference.

Also, a couple other Health resolutions is to try to do more yoga. Currently, I take a Monday night class, but i'd like to do a little more - this will depend on my fave yogi's schedule - but that doesn't mean i can't do 15-20 minutes of sun salutations while at home to help me warm up or warm down from a work out.

I'd like to get the puppies out more... with the nice weather so they can get out and see some sun. When it gets too hot, its hard for them, but i do think they would enjoy more nice weather.

Diet wise, I'm going to try to eat smarter. Really focus on what is going into my body... but that's a hard resolution that will take daily reminders.

Do any of you have any new goals now that the weather is getting nicer? Any advice to help stick to them?

Well Adjusted Tiger Cub

So while on the subject of parenting... something I don't have first hand knowledge about, but still - feel I can have my judgments (i try not to make them harsh and keep most to myself  >.< ) I recently stumbled across a new blog, and I wanted to share...

The new blog is written by a young girl, merely the age of 18 - a high school senior, yet i find her humor funny, her writing mature and can sense her intellect behind the humor that she writes with.  Her name is Sophia and she has a blog called a New Tiger in Town.  That's right folks... it's Thee "Tiger Mother's" (from this post) Tiger Cub herself....

Pretty and intelligent, and we all know darn talented, she has started off with a few posts - mostly q&a type stuff, but I hope she continues to blog on her journey through college and life as a "tiger cub".

I like her and the blog, b/c I think it shows you can be a tiger parent and do it right. You can encourage, support, and instill a discipline in your children while loving them and showering them with affection. Not all Tiger parenting is bad... and on the flip side, not all is good...

So I happily find that this "tiger cub" seems like a normal and VERY well adjusted high school teen...

Enjoy, i especially found her calculation of play dates hilarious! :)

"Parent's Say NO!!!"

I recently read the article by LZ Granderson, Parent's don't dress your girls like tramps off CNN.com and had to share!

If you haven't read it, i suggest you click on the link above and read it, but i can give you a short summary of the article. (all things italicized are sourced from Granderson's article)

Granderson starts off describing a very sexy and pretty looking young thing at the airport... wearing a halter top and low waisted sweatpants... and then states "Yeah, that 8-year-old girl was something to see alright. ... I hope her parents are proud. Their daughter was the sexiest girl in the terminal, and she's not even in middle school yet."

His article goes on to talk about the sexualization of young girls and how consumer goods are catering to 7 year olds in push up bras (disgusting!) and the like... but then he shifts the blame and goes on to say, you can't really blame retailers b/c if there wasn't a need for it, they wouldn't create it. Which is so very true.

"It's easy to blast companies for introducing the sexy wear, but our ire really should be directed at the parents who think low rise jeans for a second grader is cute."

He then discusses his own son and how he refuses to let his son walk out of the house with pants sagging under his a**. He acknowledges that this refusal to let your child do as they please can cause tension, but "but I'm his father, not his friend. Friends bow to peer pressure. Parents say, "No, and that's the end of it."" (that statement needed a bold and underline!)

I appreciate how Granderson goes on to say "The way I see it, my son can go to therapy later if my strict rules have scarred him. But I have peace knowing he'll be able to afford therapy as an adult because I didn't allow him to wear or do whatever he wanted as a kid. Maybe I'm a Tiger Dad."

BRAVO BRAVO! He says exactly what I feel. Sure I don't have kids to back this up, but i've got lots of nephews and nieces-and I treat them as I would my own. Luckily our siblings and their significant others, give us that leeway to say "no" when we need to and discipline them if we ever needed (and we actually don't have to). But i'd be the first to tell them "no, you are NOT wearing that!" even if it means being the not so nice Aunt for the day.

We often like to shift blame as to who is at fault for the things that go wrong with our children, but at the end of the day - it is the parents responsibility to raise your children the way you think is right. Like Granderson says "A line needs to be drawn, but not by Abercrombie. Not by Britney Spears. And not by these little girls who don't know better and desperately need their parents to be parents and not 40-year-old BFFs."

Take responsibility is key. Be a parent first, a friend second... one day, your child will thank you for it! and if they need therapy from the "tiger parenting", like Granderson says, at least you know they will be able to afford the therapy as an adult from the "tiger parenting".

This just hit home, even without my own children, so much so that I had to share...

How to return a Lost Wallet

So the Husband and I did a really good deed this weekend. And I know its really good b/c people keep telling me how nice we are for it. And I'm probably not being smart about blabbing it to the world, since we need all the good Karma points we can get and boasting about good deeds detracts from that... but I wanted to share b/c I thought we got pretty creative in the hunt for the man who lost his wallet :)

The pups and I were out for a stroll down at the National Mall. It was crowded since the day was just gorgeous... a lot of people, a lot of families, a lot of tour groups and a lot of young kids all about... It was a great day to be outside.

As we were walking up along 7th Street headed back towards Chinatown, I noticed a wallet on the west side of the street by the National Archives.  Husband attributes me finding said wallet b/c of the pups... they are scavengers to say the least - and with so many tourists in town, I know they are both on the hunt to put something they shouldn't in their mouth.

I picked up the wallet, looked around... looked for a police officer... looked for anybody who looked like they lost something. It was the end of our walk, so the pups were pooped... so i decided to walk home and hope i saw an officer on my way.

Of course no such luck, and even when we called the non-emergency police line, they simply said "send it to the address inside the wallet"... No help at all.

The dude wasn't from the DC area, so he was probably visiting and I was concerned if he was flying "how would he get back on the airplane?" So my last resort - ship the wallet as is to the address on his driver's license.  But otherwise, I'd try to find the dude...

The wallet had an ID, cash, a couple credit cards, a copy of a resident alien card, a few international phone numbers on a piece of paper, a triple A card and a paper discount card for the Marriott.

So after resolving to try not to feel bad for "snooping" through this person's wallet, I called the Marriott. The lady there was super nice when I explained to her I had found a wallet, found this discount card, and simply wanted to return it to its owner. She called all the local Marriotts, but nobody with that last name had a reservation.

So then I went on to the WORLD WIDE WEB... and started googling. I was able to find the person's deed, info on age and marital relationship of the dude (and his wife), his wife's place of work and that was about it.

So i pulled out one of the credit cards and called the 866 number. I hit that Lost and Found option and spoke with a rep. I explained that I had not lost a card, but that I was hoping if i gave them a name and card number - they could contact the person and give him my info, so he could retrieve his wallet. She looked it up and took my number. She said the security division would call.

When Husband came home from work, he went through the wallet too. He said, well let's try AAA since nobody has called yet - it can't hurt to have more than one  place try to contact him. So he did.

AAA was amazing. The membership was cancelled but the person looked into the history of the account and found one call. So the service rep called the number and found it was the wife's cell. So Husband gave the rep his cell phone # and asked the rep to leave a message.

The dude was reunited with his wallet yesterday probably about 24 hrs from the point he had lost it. Husband and I felt pretty good about ourselves. We refused to take any thing from the dude b/c like i said, We need all the good Karma we can get!

So why am i using up some of our good karma points by telling y'all this story? Well, if i had figured "o well, can't find the person on google or at the marriott" and just sent it back - the dude could have been stuck. His wife was up all night she claimed worried... and while there wasn't a ton of money in the wallet, the time it would take to replace all those items in there wasn't wasted.

We got creative...
1. had to dig through the wallet - felt bad for it, but had to do it. It was investigative... My countless hours watching Criminal Minds and NCIS paid off.
2. Googled the person. searched for them on FB, google, etc...
3. Looked for clues in the wallet... ours led to dead ends
4. Used the credit cards or membership cards available to ask those companies to reach out. It wasn't invading privacy or getting info we shouldn't have. we simply gave them our info to pass along.

Worst case, we were going to send the wallet back priority mail with a note explaining how we found the wallet and tried to return it to them...

Sure it took about an hour out of my day (doing laundry and ironing!) but it was so worth it b/c i know if it were me... i'd have been forever grateful for the extra measures taken to help me out...

So our good deed of the day was appreciated, and that in an of itself made it worth it... have you ever gone out of your way to do something good? did you have to get creative?

"Larry Day"

Last week, I was invited to screen the movie "Bridesmaids" and my husband volunteered to go with me. My first reaction was "No No, you don't have to!" and then "Why, is there no Yankee game on?"... then i said "Well, i guess if you get stuck watching any 'chick flick' with me, this is probably the most enjoyable one for you."... Turns out he was setting me up to have his own "Larry Day" on Saturday.

What is "Larry Day" you ask?... well its off the concept from one of our favorite shows we watch together - Rules of Engagement and one of the characters dub "Jeff Day". The Husband and I often laugh about how similar the character Jeff and he are, and at times i find comfort that the Husband is not as bad as Jeff, and other times, amusement that he can be even more barbaric than Jeff...

I couldn't find a great clip, but from this commercial about a new time and date for the show - they show a small clip as to what "Jeff Day" is ...

So, the Husband has been working hard, practically daily since our Vegas trip and daily prior to that but for my surgery day. So at the beginning of last week, he sent me an email titled "Weekly schedule" and this is what it looked like:

Monday:  Work
Today:  Work
Wednesday: Work then Movie in Georgetown
Thursday:  Work then Fondue Cruise
Friday:  Work
Saturday:  Larry takes a "Larry Day" (i.e. i dont work or do anything but play video games and watch baseball lol)
Sunday: Work half day, eat Lincoln diner whenever you are up and ready to eat, i'll meet you there
He had it all planned out in his pretty little head of his...  So of course I agreed, but i just asked "well do i have to stay out of the condo all day then?" and he said that it'd be fine, I could stay at home but could not interrupt his "Larry day".
While "Jeff Day" proved more interesting than "Larry Day" - here's another clip from the end of that episode... after Jeff sees the cleaning lady in his favorite t-shirt and tries to tell her to take it off, and even offers her money for it. She takes it as him trying to prostitute her and Audrey has to rush home to solve things (per usual)...

The day proved uneventful for us both. I laid around and did nothing as well ...it did not seem very different with what the Husband does most evenings when he gets home from work, but he said the key was "I don't have to work today"... so i let him enjoy it. Because sooner or later, he will have a hard time even getting a "Larry afternoon"

Is there anything you do with your partner/SO/husband or wife that gives you time to just enjoy the day? And how do you enjoy it? Do you like to do outdoor activities together or separately? Or perhaps individually or jointly do a hobby together?

An Angel has left us

and gone to heaven...

June 19, 2009 my sister in law's nephew was shot in the face on his 13th birthday. I posted about a fundraiser for Tony Boy and for prayers for him and his family.

Miraculously, Tonyboy woke out of the very long coma and was alive. He had lost his sense of smell and his eyesight, but he was alive. He had issues with his health and his immobility due to his new impediments, all of which effected him greatly. The past few months he's been in and out of the hospital struggling... and its been very difficult for me, a helpless bystander to watch my sister in law go through this.

The other night, Tonyboy was at home after another stint in the hospital and passed away in his sleep.

I share this with y'all b/c I am hoping you can send positive thoughts, energy, prayers and wishes to my sister in law and her family. My nephews and niece are in pain from losing their cousin and the whole situation is just really tragic.

Also, sometimes memorializing a life means letting the fragility of your own mortality hit home. Make sure you let your friends and family know just how much you love them ... b/c every day could be your last and if not yours, their last - so make sure to love like crazy and don't be afraid to show that!

Tony Silva, Rest in peace... although I've never had the honor to physically meet you, I loved you and hope that you are able to finally stop the physical struggle and can find peace.
