Hello, Pittsburgh!!!

This weekend, The Husband and I went to Pittsburgh for a dear friend's wedding. It was my first trip to this lovely city and it truly is one of the most under-rated cities in the States. It is absolutely beautiful with great architecture and a city full of history and rich in culture.

Here are a few photos from our first day in Pittsburgh... just of the various things I saw on the drive through and from our hotel room at Station Square...

a visitor on our hotel window...
the view from our hotel room.

Luckily we had a chance to explore downtown the next day before the wedding since the city is such a fabulous place... but for now I will leave you with these photos (mostly taken from the car) until tomorrow...

Hope y'all had a great Memorial Day Weekend!

* 20% visit theme parks
* Sun, sand and surf MUCH more important (48% consider it a top 3 honeymoon feature)
* 41% visited more than one locale (almost 2 times more likely compared with domestic honeymooners)

KEY 2010 HONEYMOON TRENDS

Majority of Honeymooners Are Not Affected by the Economy. A majority of couples (60%) did not scale back their honeymoon budget because of the economy. In fact, 1 in 4 couples spent more than they originally budgeted, and 21% spent more than $6,000 on their total honeymoon. In addition, 12% of couples are registering for their honeymoon, and 20% use travel rewards toward their honeymoon.

“Couples today remain committed to planning a luxurious, unforgettable honeymoon and are willing to spend despite the state of the economy,” added Carley Roney, editor in chief of The Knot Inc. “In fact, 3 in 5 couples are booking extras on their honeymoon, and 25% spent more than they had originally budgeted.”

Luxury Honeymooners Spend Approximately $10,000. Nationwide, luxury honeymooners spend an average of $9,954 on their honeymoon, and approximately 1 in 4 reside in New York or California. They honeymoon for an average of 11 days, and a majority (64%) visit more than one locale.

The Continental U.S. Surpasses the Caribbean for the First Time. The number of couples honeymooning in the continental U.S. has increased – 30% in 2010 vs. 26% in 2009 – surpassing the Caribbean as a honeymoon destination region (28% in 2010 vs. 31% in 2009) for the first time. Top domestic honeymoon locales include Walt Disney World/Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Miami and the Florida Keys.

Couples Increasingly Planning on Their Own. Self-directed booking dominates, with 47% of couples booking their lodging directly with a vendor and 21% using a third-party online travel site. While couples are decreasingly using travel agents to book lodging (28% in 2010 compared with 34% in 2009), more than half of honeymooners are booking a portion of their honeymoon online. In fact, 9% of honeymooners use a mobile app with their planning, and 2% book lodging on online deal-of-the-day websites like WeddingChannel.com Deals, Groupon and Jetsetter.

On Facebook While Honeymooning. Honeymooners don’t take a vacation from social media or mobile devices. Nearly half of couples (48%) visit Facebook while on their honeymoon, and approximately 1 in 5 couples (19%) use a mobile app during that time.

Only 1 in 4 Couples Go on Their Dream Honeymoon. Despite the increase in domestic honeymoons, only 9% of domestic honeymooners consider the continental U.S. their “dream” honeymoon destination. The top “dream” honeymoon destination overall is Europe, followed by the South Pacific and then Hawaii.

Sunrise Rooftop Yoga

The building I live in has brought back Sunrise Rooftop Yoga and I couldn't be happier. Today was our first class of the year and it was great.

While the sounds of the city bustling around us get louder and louder, my thoughts are brought into my practice as we spend that short 60 minutes focusing on our bodies and minds.

Lately, i've been practicing more and more every week. Trying Flow Yoga, Yogalates, Astanga yoga and learning to practice at different times...

Each session builds my body and my mind. Each 60 - 75 minutes I can feel the strength build in my arms.

It is so amazing how your body continues to change and adapt and improve...

I absolutely love it.

Do you do any type of activity that just helps you release your stress and refocus on bringing good energy into your body? Do you do yoga? What's your favorite kind?

Ingredients
FOR THE STIR-FRY:
4 whole Chinese Eggplants (or 2 regular eggplants)
⅓ cups Canola Oil
4 cloves Garlic, Minced Or Grated
1 teaspoon Fresh Ginger, Minced Or Grated
¼ cups Sliced Green Onions

FOR THE SAUCE:
¼ cups Soy Sauce
⅓ cups Vegetable Stock
2 Tablespoons Duck Sauce
2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Hot Chili Paste Or Asian Hot Sauce Like Sriracha
Preparation Instructions
First slice the eggplant into planks, about 2-1/2 inches long. Add half of the canola oil to a wok and turn the heat up to high. Add half of the the eggplant into the hot oil (you’ll want do do this in two batches, adding the remaining oil to the second batch). Saute the eggplant on high heat, stirring occasionally. Let the eggplant get golden brown on all sides. This should take about 10 minutes. Once the first batch is done, remove it from the wok and repeat with remaining oil and eggplant.
In a separate bowl, combine the ingredients for the sauce: soy sauce, vegetable stock, duck sauce, rice vinegar, chili paste or Asian hot sauce like Sriracha and whisk until you have an even mixture. Set aside.
Mince or grate the garlic and ginger and transfer to the wok with all of the eggplant and saute on high for about 3 minutes.
Make sure the heat is set to high and then add in the sauce, tossing everything around really well. Add in half of the green onions and mix. Saute for about 2 minutes. Reserve the rest of the green onions for the garnish.

Spicy Morrocan Roasted Chickpeas

Spicy Moroccan Roasted Chickpeas (http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/appetizers-and-snacks/spicy-moroccan-roasted-chickpeas/)

Ingredients
1 can(15 Oz. Can) Chickpeas
¼ cups Olive Oil
½ teaspoons Curry Powder
½ teaspoons Allspice
½ teaspoons Ground Cloves
½ teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice
2 teaspoons Cinnamon
½ teaspoons Cayenne Powder
2 teaspoons Fresh Grated Ginger
2 teaspoons Sea Salt
Preparation Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
Toss the chickpeas in oil, then put them into a bowl. Combine all the spices in a separate little bowl for your spice blend. Give it a good mix, then sprinkle over the chickpeas, and toss to coat evenly.
Put the chickpeas onto a baking sheet and into the oven for about 30 minutes. About halfway through, give them a bit of a shake. At the end of the 30 minutes, taste! If they are still soft, back in they go! You want them to have just a little bit of a soft center. When they cool, they will crisp up more.

Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble

Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble (smittenkitchen.com/2007/05/crumbling-crisp-convictions)
For the topping:
1 1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons sugar
Zest of one lemon
1/4 pound (1 stick or 4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
For the filling:
1 1/2 cups rhubarb, chopped into 1-inch pieces
1 quart strawberries plus a few extras, hulled, quartered
Juice of one lemon
1/2 cup sugar
3 to 4 tablespoons cornstarch
Pinch of salt
1. Heat oven to 375°F. Prepare topping: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugars and lemon zest and add the melted butter. Mix until small and large clumps form. Refrigerate until needed.
2. Prepare filling: Toss rhubarb, strawberries, lemon juice, sugar, cornstarch and a pinch of salt in a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. (I used an oval dish this time, because they fit better in the bottom of a shopping bag.)
3. Remove topping from refrigerator and cover fruit thickly and evenly with topping. Place pie plate on a (foil-lined, if you really want to think ahead) baking sheet, and bake until crumble topping is golden brown in places and fruit is bubbling beneath, about 40 to 50 minutes.

Eat~Practice~Love

Lately, I have been attending yoga several times a week. What is great about it is, that two friends are teachers and a few other local friends are getting active in their own practice, so we all meet up weekly. It's always nice to see friends, but doing something physically and mentally beneficial at the same time is not as easy. Usually we meet up for happy hours, big meals or food/drink events... but the weekly Yoga for our health. Sure we may eat afterwards together (hee hee)... but only to rewards ourselves for our great workouts!

We planned a great event... Kind of like Eat Pray Love, but without all the travel... dubbed Eat~Practice~Love!

It was an amazing time where we Practiced together and then ate together... the ladies cooked up an amazing vegetarian feast (and i'm a meat eater, but i was happily chowing down sans meat) and just spent time with each other. It was awesome...
Salad
Spicy Morrocan Roasted Chickpeas
Raw Zucchini and Corn w/Olive oil, salt & Pepper
Sweet Pickles from Eastern Market
French Bread, Sliced Radishes, Butter and Sea Salt Flakes
Spicy Schezwan Eggplant

Wild Berries salad
Eggplant and Zucchini No Noodle Lasagna
Fresh Beets
Whole Foods Garlic seasoned Veggies
Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble
And here I am hiding from having my picture taken...

I'll be posting the recipes for some of these great entrees... more to journal them for myselves, but stay tuned b/c they were delish!

Bicycle Safety

I recently decided to sign up for this great new program in DC called Capital Bikeshare.  You simply pay an annual/monthly/weekly/daily membership fee and are able to rent (for your desired time) bikes from bike stations all over DC. You pick up at one station and drop off at another station. If I want, I can cab/metro home on my return trip if its too late or dark. A nice freedom with the ability to just drop off the bike without a care. And with the rash of bicycle thefts in the District, this is a great alternative to owning my own bicycle.

The annual membership only cost $75 dollars and there are 1100 bikes to choose from, that are all well equipped..."Capital Bikeshare bikes are easy, fun and safe to use and ride. They are step-thru frames, have 3 speeds, front and rear flashing LED lights and a handy front rack. Plus the internal hub gears, chain guard and fenders keep you riding clean, confidently and in style." (Sourced from Capital Bikeshare)

The stations are located all over the District and even in NoVA and are solar powered. So Eco-friendly. And they want to create more stations!

You can see it already, the streets are full of bicyclists and its a great thing to see a city turn so Bicycle friendly in such a short time. The Express last week even talked about Bicycle traffic ... which is kinda cool even though its traffic. The movement towards bikes are picking up and I joined the movement!

While the city is becoming more bicyclist-friendly, the drivers here are still unaware. I'm guilty of this as I don't know the rules for sharing my lane with a bicyclist... especially in a city where if you leave a little room, another car will come swooping in... so I am prepared.

I didn't want a helmet, but I got one... and i look like a fool... but, it's ok, right? Here's a photo me with my new helmet (with tags on LOL)

So there are many reasons i am wearing my helmet, but above all - I know I can ride a bicycle safely, but I can't control the drivers, the pedestrians, the other cyclists and how vulnerable I am on a bicycle... so I have to be defensive and offensive while on the bicycle.

Reading up on this great pdf "Safe bicycling in the Washington Area" - a great ride for bicyclist and drivers, b/c we need to know who we share the road with... and there ARE cyclist laws in each area (here is a link that has non-motorist laws.)

I'm also getting to know the various bicycle routes around here... so I use this bicycle map!

So i've yet to try out the program, it's been rainy in the District, but I am looking forward to biking to yoga classes in Dupont or Bloomingdale and feeling the freedom that having a bicycle will give me!

Do you bike? Or part of a similar program? Any suggestions or tips?

Mother's Day Weekend Recap

We had a great weekend spending it with the in-laws in NJ. Mother's day weekend always falls on my MIL's birthday weekend - so without fail, we head up to NJ.

The weekend was fun and full of family time - specifically with the Husband's two adorable neices.

Here is our beautiful neice (she was also in the wedding) playing with her Uncle. He spent about 2 hrs pushing her on that rope swing and spent the remaining part of the evening in pain ... "i'm so sore" he kept groaning!

You can tell she had a blast and we always spend a lot of time with her when we visit the family...

She's just so cute!

Actual mother's day we had brunch, with our family and the Husband's brother in law's family... a nice fun brunch full of a lot of food!

Then we went to watch a baseball game...
She's a pro...
and hits the ball really well.
Here's our other neice... she's about 1 1/2 years old.. just as adorable!

but when she cries, she sure gets dramatic... I ♥ this photo b/c i caught a tear fall off her face mid way...

Is it mean that I think she still looks so cute crying?

Then we gave her an empty water bottle and all was well in the world again!

So how was your mother's day? did you have a moment to spend it with family?

Dog Travel Issues

Lately, when we treck up to my In-laws, we've been giving our eldest pup (Juneau the Husky) some medicine. He isn't comfy in car rides, stands for a majority of the ride and his back leg starts to shake. The medicine should ease any discomfort he has physically, but I think emotionally it's not helping...

This past weekend, this is what I saw when i turned to the back of our car...

Somehow both dogs decided to avoid the comfy dog bed we have laid out or the blanket and Kota (the Shiba) decides to wedge himself into a back corner to stare at the BACK of the car... and then Juneau decides he wants over there too...

I mean this can't be comfortable... but eventually Juneau laid down a bit, was laying on Kota's tail which Kota hates, but just sat through....

and eventually, they were like this...
A friend said he had his big dog do that to the little one and thought she was being a jerk, until he realized it was b/c he wanted to be closer to her b/c he was nervous... is that what is going on here? Perhaps what looks to me as uncomfy is actually what they both want as brothers?

Do you have dog travel issues? We've tried the meds and putting the dog bed out and blankets, but nothing seems to ease Juneau's travel issues while Kota couldn't care either way... Any suggestions are helpful!

{Movie Review} Bridesmaids

A little over a month ago, the Husband and I had a hilariously funny date night. I was invited to attend a pre-screening of the movie Bridesmaids, and the Husband agreed to go with me. This was a big deal b/c the Husband and I have vastly different taste in movies - so I was a little worried if he would have a good time.

Well, a few minutes into the movie, I no longer had any concerns.

If you haven't seen previews for the movie Bridesmaids, I highly suggest you watch the clip at the bottom of this post... HIlarious!

The movie was hysterically funny, humorously crass and at points, still had its sentimental moments. I laughed so hard I cried, and i got weepy, I admit b/c I am a "chick" and this is what some would dub a "chick flick" but is anything but. And to be honest, I will be watching this again soon b/c this is just one of those movies you do have to watch with your girlfriends. I want to go over scenes with y'all but I don't want to give anything away, but it is hilarious. I still crack up just watching the commercials!

And in honor of girlfriends and bridesmaids everywhere, The Relentless Bride Blog is doing a giveaway! (Yay! Cheers! WOOHOOO!) So you'll have to check back later TODAY for the giveaway :)

Happy Mother's Day

Today is a day we celebrate our mothers. I am fortunate to have two wonderful mothers... my mother and my mother in law.

Both beautiful women who are strong role models to me for different reasons... and for that I thank them.

To my mother and mother in law, Happy mother's day. We love you!
